On Friday afternoon, August 23, we motored up to Chilton County to visit with the Ukrainian orphans at Camp Bridgestone near Billingsley. David & Lisa Bundy were in the process of adopting children who visited there, and asked that we help support the facility. They said that the kids enjoyed seeing and riding in their little cars and would like to do more of that.
BMC member, Tracy Bhalla, owner of Cool Beans, offered to prepare boxed meals for the staff, kids, and our BMC folks at her cost. At our July meeting, we agreed that BMC would pick up the first $200 of the cost and the Bundys have offered to pay any balance. If you weren’t able to make the trip with us, but would like to help the camp, the address for the camp is:
302 County Road 383
Billingsley, AL 36006-2842
And, if anyone would like to make a monetary donation, use PayPal and make payment to gift@bridgesoffaith.com or mail check to above. The camp would also appreciate donations including paper plates, toilet paper, napkins, bottled water, clothes, canned goods, and toiletries.
Considering that the event was on a week-day afternoon, we had a great turn-out. We met at the Burlington Coat Factory parking lot at 3:00pm, and rolled out at 3:15pm. The route for going up took about 1 hour 15 minutes from Montgomery via Wetumpka, Holtville, and Verbena. When we arrived at the facility, the kids (and a few grown-ups) seemed excited to see the cars and eager to take turns riding in one car after another until we paused to eat. Tracy had prepared a variety of sandwiches, salad, macaronni with trimmings and drinks — all as wholesome as they were delicious. Following dinner, the boys & girls were hopping back into the cars wanting more. This went on until well after dark.
Thanks to all who shared their cars with the kids, to Tracy Bhalla for preparing the meals, and special thanks to David and Lisa Bundy for suggesting that we do this, and for handling all of the organization and coordination.
