2019 BMC British Car Day

Well, the day began normally enough. A stubborn 83 year old, unhappy about getting up early in the morning for a run, expressed his displeasure by unexpectedly taking a nap on the side of Wares Ferry Road.

No folks, this is not a clear example of elder abuse, but rather a day in the life with Doc’s prized ’36 Ford. He decided to restart without incident when the grownup of the pair sent to get him – let’s call him Russell – said to the dumbass – let’s call him Tom – that trying again wasn’t a good idea. After tucking the Ford safely in the warehouse, we returned to show’s new venue, Jan’s Beach House Grill.

In our absence, David, Andy, Hank, Deborah, Dan, Mignonne, Cathy, Tom Densmore and Pam had transformed the parking lot into a show arena, complete with canopies, signage, and chairs for the hard working (sitting?) car owners. Jan’s patio served as our registration area, and gift selection outlet mall later on.

Dizzied by the flurry of activity, I decided I needed a little pick-me-up, and the bar at Jan’s obliged, staving away my scurvy with a well-prepared Bloody Mary. Try that at the Shed, I thought . . .

We had a good mix of cars, old, new, English, German, Japanese. As always, I wanted more cars on the lot, but we had nearly filled our venue with the 26 cars which attended. A really refreshing change was the amount of foot traffic. A helluva lot of folks saw the cars as they drove on the Boulevard, pulled in to see, and enjoyed themselves seeing, touching and learning something about cars which have become unusual on the road.

After much soul-searching, our host awarded the first annual Jan’s Choice trophy, an award so cool it lights up at night, to our resident trophy magnet, Bill Berg, and his lovely TR3. Congrats to him and the rest of the winners or their efforts in getting their machines ready for the event. No trailers were used at this show – hurray!

When you see her next, please than Jan, as she generously provided a place for us to celebrate after our secession from the Alabama Department of Agriculture.

I hope she will green light a sequel event. Who knows? Two flamingos on the Jan’s Choice trophy? 2 for 1 drink specials? The mind boggles, dear readers.

Sincere thanks to all who participated for their hard work behind the scenes that made this event run smooth, like buttah. To those who didn’t, we’ll see you next year, right?
