Three Little British Cars (and two others along for moral support) met at the Pike Road Town Hall for our caravan to the 2019 British Car Festival at Woodruff Park in Columbus GA. We were on the road at 7:00 AM CDT with the sun on the eastern horizon to show us the way. We motored via the rolling hills of US 80. It’s 1.5 hours travel time plus, we lost an hour when we entered the Eastern Time Zone. We arrived at the car show at 8:30 CDT/9:30 EDT.
The Peachtree MG Registry of Georgia selects a different fledgling club to sponsor and promote every other year. This was the first such event for the Columbus area Brits in the Valley. When we registered, close to 70 British cars on the field. A sizable contingent from the Middle Georgia/Macon club were there as well as and even larger contingent from the Atlanta clubs.
Among the more unusual cars were: a couple of Lotus (Esprit and Excel), a Morgan+8, Allard Model L, a Sunbeam IMP, Triumph Herald, four MG T-types, and Mike’s McLaren 12C. Tom’s freshly sprayed TR6 was among the smattering of Triumphs including two TR3s, two other TR6s, Spitfires and the Herald, 3 XJ Jaguars, one modified A-H 100 and a Bugeye, but the field was pretty much dominated by MGs of both the A and B type from the Peachtree MG Registry.
We found some welcomed shade under the oaks on the south end of the field. As mealtime neared, we made the two-block walk to Cannon Brew Pub (one of many trendy restaurants on Broadway) for a lunch of pizzas and burgers.
The organizers selected a wonderful venue. See if this sounds familiar: a riverfront setting with a downtown university, a historic district loaded with eateries, a large military base nearby, and bedroom communities across the river. This describes Columbus AND Montgomery. Not just sister cities, but twin sisters.
Thanks to the organizers and volunteers for making this a a terrific British car show and a wonderful day. We’re looking forward to returning there again if they opt to make this an annual affair.
