We all know that summertime in south-central Alabama can be oppressive and the humidity stifling. We’d just come off of a week of 100+ degree heat-indexes. Only mad dogs and English car owners go out in the midday sun. So, to help beat the heat, our motorer-in-chief floated the possibility of an ice cream run. I suggested a visit to the Blue Bell factory to sample their flavor-of the-month — Listeria. Ummmmm. I guess that was too far, because no one else seemed interested. So, on Saturday, June 27, we were off to an early start on our (nearly) annual outing to Peach Park in Clanton. A MGB, a Austin Healey 3000, 1 Jaguar XK8, 2 MINI Coopers, a Honda S2000, and the Triumphus pulled out of the BCF parking lot at 8:30. Our next stop was at the Catfish House in Millbrook where we picked up another XK8 and 2 more MINIs from our Millbrook and Prattville contingent. Don led us up the scenic back roads of Elmore, Autauga, and Chilton Counties through Robinson Springs, Deatsville, Verbena, Cooper — finally to our destination at Peach Park. Chilton County was celebrating their annual Peach Festival that brought a larger than usual crowd. Some of us had to park in the overflow car park. To our surprise, we found four more BMC members who had driven up in their “other” cars. Most of us enjoyed the fresh-off-the-tree peach ice cream or peach cobbler. They were giving away hot dogs, so we had that for dessert. As we left for our ride back home, the temperature was still in the mid-eighties. Two of the MINI Coopers (Jacob and his wife Ashley and Gegory and his friend Daniel with the River Region MINIs) were first-time guests that we hope to see again soon and often. And, thanks to Terry for putting this together and to Don for leading us through the back country.
